Lake Titicaca and the Floating Islands Of Uros

The islands are made by the Uros Indians with blocks of reeds and mud that they cut from the banks of Lake Titicaca.
Chief of the island with his wife. On this island there are 24 people from three families. On your best dress up day you put more layers of skirts on to show how many skirts you have!

This is the demo on how the blocks are joined together.

They tie them together to form a floating island and then cover them with reeds to create a dry layer on top. It feel sort of spongy when you walk on them and the whole surface has a bounce and sway to it - you definitely know you are floating!

The boats take a week to make and last for three months - they call this one Mercedes Benz

Even the cows float on their own island!
